Title: Lucent Technologies showcases next-generation Service Intelligent™ Architecture

DALLAS - When the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) opens, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), network equipment supplier for the world's largest communications service providers, will be showcasing next-generation optical networking systems that give its customers the solutions required for today's and tomorrow's advanced networks.

"Lucent is committed to delivering the most innovative, reliable and cost-effective optical networking solutions to meet the needs of the world's leading service providers," said Tim Sullivan, president, Optical Networking, Lucent Technologies. "Our Service Intelligent Architecture means service providers can choose our optical solutions for today's network with the assurance they're also making a solid investment in the network of the future."

In Booth 2932, Lucent will be showing its portfolio of optical networking products that enable service providers to offer new revenue-generating services like Ethernet over SONET, wavelength services, and storage area networking services. From the metro optical portfolio, Lucent will be showing the Metropolis® Enhanced Optical Networking (EON), a metro ring DWDM system, and the Metropolis® DMX Access Multiplexer, an integrated SONET/Ethernet metro access multiplexer.

The core optical portfolio includes the LambdaUnite™ MultiService Switch, a next-generation switch and transport system, and the LambdaXtreme™ Transport, a dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system, which can dramatically lower the costs of designing and building networks, and substantially reduce the costs involved in upgrading the network's speed and capacity as traffic grows.

To further address the metro optical networking market, Lucent is previewing the Metropolis® DMXtend Access Multiplexer, an addition to its Metropolis® portfolio of next-generation optical products designed to serve the metropolitan area network optical access market. Metropolis® DMXtend will enable Lucent's service provider customers to offer reliable voice and data services to enterprises in smaller central office applications. DMXtend is based on the same technology as the Metropolis® DMX, that has been deployed by more than 40 customers. DMXtend offers fully protected network services in less space than the full-sized DMX. The DMXtend is especially useful for service providers who want to deploy equipment in outside-plant cabinets where space is at a premium.

Lucent's networks are based on the Service Intelligent™ Architecture, and deliver "service-ready" capabilities, including the ability to provision an end-to-end optical wavelength service in just two steps through automated provisioning. The Lucent Service Intelligent™ Architecture allocates network resources automatically and dynamically, while simplifying network operations and management. It reflects the multivendor realities of the network by providing an open, programmable service creation environment capable of supporting network elements from multiple vendors.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., USA, designs and delivers networks for the world's largest communications service providers. Backed by Bell Labs research and development, Lucent relies on its strengths in mobility, optical, data and voice networking technologies as well as software and services to develop next-generation networks. The company's systems, services and software are designed to help customers quickly deploy and better manage their networks and create new, revenue-generating services that help businesses and consumers.
